What a Steam page needs

GIFs play in About This Game and special announcements. Steamworks asks for each image under 5 MB, all images on the page under 15 MB, and 12 seconds at most per animation.

  • 3–5 GIFs, one mechanic each.
  • 4–8 seconds each; every extra second is 24 more frames.
  • Start on a good-looking frame, not a fade or loading screen.

Frame rate is game feel

Hit-stop, screen shake and animation timing fall apart at 12 fps, so Lazygif uses 24 fps here. Pay for it with a smaller width and shorter clips, and cut where the motion resets so the loop is clean.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What size should a GIF be for a Steam store page?
Under 5 MB each and 15 MB for the page, about 600–640 px wide.
Why does my game GIF look choppy?
The frame rate is too low for fast motion. Export at 24 fps and save size with width and length instead.
Should I post a GIF or an MP4 for #ScreenshotSaturday?
Either; X turns GIFs into video anyway. A GIF under 5 MB works everywhere, and an MP4 keeps the sound.
