How to · 3 steps

Step by step

  1. 1

Open the GIF or the video

Start from the original video if you have it: it looks better than re-compressing a GIF.

  2. 2

    Pick a target

Choose a destination like GitHub, Discord or email, or type your own limit in MB.

  3. 3

    Export

Lazygif fits the GIF under the target; Compare shows what each Quality step costs.

What shrinks a GIF, in order

Pull these levers from the top; the first two do most of the work.

  • Width. Halving it cuts pixels to a quarter. 800 → 640 px often saves a third.
  • Frames. Trim the ends, cut idle stretches, drop to 12–15 fps.
  • Crop. Static margins and toolbars cost bytes on every frame.
  • Colors. Fewer colors and gentler dithering, at the cost of grain or banding.

When a GIF won’t get small enough

Camera footage, gradients and full-screen motion change every pixel every frame, so GIF can’t compress them well. Shorten it, crop tighter, or switch to MP4 if the destination takes video. All the limits are on GIF size limits.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I compress a GIF under 10 MB?
Pick the GitHub preset or set a 10 MB limit. Lazygif picks the least-degraded mix of width, frame rate and quality that fits, and confirms it with a real encode.
Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?
A little: trimming, cropping margins and cutting idle frames cost nothing visible. Beyond that, every saving is a tradeoff.
Should I compress the GIF or re-export from the video?
Re-export from the video if you have it. A GIF has already lost color, and compressing it again compounds the loss.
